"The Arete Quartet is among those rare quartet players who are truly artists in the best sense of the word. They possess everything a musician needs, completely convincing their audience with their extraordinary musicianship and deep sensibility."

— Günter Pichler, 1st Violinist of Alban Berg Quartett

Named after the Greek word for 'virtue' or 'excellence,' the Arete Quartet is currently one of the most acclaimed young string quartets in the classical music scene. Deeply committed to exploring the essential values of music and artistic perfection, the quartet has established itself as a leading force for the next generation of chamber music since its formation in 2019, sweeping prestigious international competitions with their exceptional cohesive power.

The Arete Quartet's trajectory is defined by overwhelming success on the global stage. In 2021, they became the first Korean string quartet to win First Prize at the Prague Spring International Music Competition, along with five special awards. In 2023, they secured First Prize at the 15th International Mozart Competition in Salzburg, where they also received the prize for the Best Interpretation of a work by Mozart, earning recognition for their profound insight into classical repertoire. Their success continued in 2024 with a First Prize and five special awards at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition. Most recently, in 2025, they solidified their status as a world-class ensemble by becoming the first Korean quartet to reach the finals and receive awards at both the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition and the Banff International String Quartet Competition (BISQC).

Their artistic excellence has led to frequent invitations from renowned concert halls and prestigious festivals worldwide. The quartet has performed on major European stages, including the Prague Spring International Music Festival, Barcelona Obertura Spring Festival, Heidelberg String Quartet Festival, Marvão International Music Festival, and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival. Domestically, they regularly engage with audiences at premier events such as the SAC International Music Festival, Music in PyeongChang, and the Seoul Spring Festival of Chamber Music.

Furthermore, the Arete Quartet made history as the first ensemble to be appointed as the Resident Artist at Kumho Art Hall in 2025, and they are further expanding their global influence as Artists-in-Residence at ProQuartet (European Center for Chamber Music) for the 2025-2027 seasons.

In November 2025, the quartet garnered international acclaim with the release of their first official album, Janáček & Suk, under Platoon (an Apple subsidiary label). Regarding this recording, Günter Pichler praised them, stating, "The Arete Quartet offers an exemplary interpretation, entering with impressive insight into the multifaceted emotional world of Janáček." Michal Kaňka, the legendary cellist and former member of the Prague String Quartet, also offered the highest praise: "The Arete Quartet are excellent representatives of Janáček's music, and many Czech ensembles could learn from them. Every tempo transition and mood change is logical and convincing, presented through a unified expression to which the entire team is devoted."

Having studied under Christoph Poppen and the Ébène Quartet at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, the Arete Quartet is currently furthering their artistic depth under the tutelage of Günter Pichler at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Spain. Covering a broad spectrum from classical precision to bold contemporary challenges, the four musicians move together as a single organism, continuing to open new horizons for the string quartet.

"Sie sind sehr talentierte und ausgezeichnete Streichquartette mit hervorragender Handwerkskunst und exzellenter musikalischer Intuition."
